Introduction

In the past, Safety Instrumented Systems were strictly separate from the normal plant control systems (referred to as a BPCS (Basic Process Control System-which most people refer to as the "plant DCS"). This was done for a variety of reasons, but mainly to segregate the safety and control functions and to have higher availability and reliability. In older plants, typically the BPCS was actually a collection of pneumatic panels having pneumatic instruments and controllers. The Safety System was implemented using hardwired relays and contactors.

By the end of the course, participants would be able to: - Understand International Process Safety standards. - Gain a solid fundamental knowledge of IEC 61511 and IEC 61508 - Determine required SIL ratings using at least 3 different methods as listed in IEC61511. - Configure safety systems to minimise or avoid spurious trips and create the potential to reduce production losses. - Know what can be done and what should not be done with PLC’s and smart sensors. - Take advantage of smart positioners and other self-testing devices to reduce downtime needed for proof testing. - Plan and integrate all stages of a safety system project - Know how Hazop studies are performed and be able to define safety system requirements during Hazop studies - Overview of Safety Instrumented Systems & ESD - Introduction to IEC 61511 and the Safety Lifecycle - Hazop methods and hazard analysis for defining risk reduction requirements - Principles of risk reduction and safety allocation - SIL determination methods based on IEC 61511 - SIS configurations for both safety and availability targets - Selection of sensors and actuators for safety duties - Reliability analysis methods and programs to IEC 61511 - Selection of safety controllers - System integration and application software for safety controllers - Documentation and validation of SIS systems. - Diagnostics and proof testing of safety instrumentation
